China harvests wheat amid efforts to ensure food security

By Monday, more than 60 million mu (4 million hectares) of wheat had been harvested in China, accounting for nearly 20% of the national total, as the country aims to stabilize its grain production and maintain food security.

 

Various supports are being provided to facilitate wheat harvesting across the country, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

 

Weather conditions will be conducive to harvesting and drying crops in the coming days, predicted the China Meteorological Administration.

 

China's grain production increased by 1.3% year-on-year to a record 695.41 million tons in 2023, marking the ninth consecutive year that the country has achieved a grain harvest of over 650 million tons. National wheat production stood at 136.59 million tons, a decrease of 0.8%.

 

The Chinese people seek to firmly hold their rice bowls in their own hands and have made continuous efforts toward this end.

 

To encourage farmers to grow grains, the central government raised the minimum purchase prices for wheat and rice in 2023 and improved grain subsidy policies for corn and soybean producers.

 

"We will improve grain production, storage, and processing systems and take comprehensive measures to consolidate the foundation of food security," according to the government's 2024 work report.
